Hazardscape Prototype

Immersive Wildfire Data Visualization

This immersive data visualization prototype was designed and developed in partnership with Hazardscape to explore the potential for immersive data visualization in wildfire training and preparedness.

THE PROJECT

This project integrates 3D spatial data, historical wildfire data, 360 photographs and 3D point clouds in an immersive tool developed with Unity for the Meta Quest. The project showcases the potential use of emerging technology as governments and organizations prepare for the unthinkable. This prototype presents an alternative method of 3D data visualization intended to accompany conventional GIS-based data visualizations, offers an immersive training tool for exposing stakeholders to unfamiliar landscapes and forest types, and allows for 3D visual analyses of 3D data products derived from LiDAR and photogrammetric surveys.

Use Case #1

Spatial Data Visualization

The relationships between complex terrain and the spatial data associated with it can be difficult to comprehend. Immersive tools provide an opportunity for experiential visual analyses of 3D terrain and spatial data – allowing for perspectives and interactions not possible with conventional inter

Use Case #2

Immersive Forest Type Training

VR provides an opportunity to immerse stakeholders within unfamiliar landscapes and forest types. The immersive 360 photographs and videos provide an interactive learning opportunity that can prepare personnel before they enter foreign environments.

USE CASE #3

Point Cloud Visualization

The 3D point clouds from LiDAR or photogrammetric surveys can be imported into a virtual environment for immersive visual analyses. These experiential, interactive visualizations offer new perspectives and an opportunity for new knowledge about the forest structure.

“We don’t pretend that #virtualreality is the end all be all…..but we do believe it has its place in disaster and emergency management. We are working to make this technology relevant and useful as governments and organizations prepare for the unthinkable.”
