HEY, I’M IAN!
I’m based in Delta, BC, and I specialize in 3D spatial data capture and 3D data visualization using extended reality (XR) technologies.
For over 10 years, I’ve been immersed in researching, designing, and developing innovative strategies for 3D spatial data capture and XR-based geographic visualizations. My PhD research delved into the complexities of these technologies—asking critical questions that go beyond the hype to uncover their real-world potential and limitations.
I believe we’re on the cusp of a profound shift in how we experience the world. As XR technologies continue to evolve, they will become as ubiquitous and essential as smartphones. Our daily reality will be enriched—and eventually intertwined—with digital layers, transforming the way we perceive our environments, our communities, and ourselves.

HOW DID I GET HERE?
In 2013, I made the bold decision to leave the comfort of full-time employment and return to university to complete the undergraduate degree I had put on hold nearly a decade earlier. I enrolled in my first GIS course—having no idea what GIS even was—and instantly fell in love with it. That led me to register for another the following semester, and then for a course titled 3D Geovisualization—again, not entirely sure what I was getting into. That class changed everything. It sparked a deep fascination with 3D geospatial data, 3D visualization, and XR technologies.
It was also in those early courses that I had the opportunity to learn from an inspiring professor—director of SFU’s Spatial Interface Research Lab—who quickly became a mentor, collaborator, and friend. His guidance shaped the course of my academic and professional life.
I completed my undergraduate degree in 2015 and immediately pursued a Master of Science under his supervision. Over the next two years, I honed my skills as a GIScientist and dove headfirst into virtual and augmented reality interface development. In 2017, I completed my MSc and seamlessly transitioned into doctoral research, continuing my collaboration with my mentor.
Now, with a PhD in hand, I’m ready to embrace the next chapter. I’ve found my passion: emerging technologies, 3D data, XR-based visualization, and using these tools to help people better understand the world around them. I’m not just here to explore new realities—I’m here to help define them.

PS…
I was born and raised in beautiful British Columbia and continue to call BC home. In addition to my studies, I am raising three young children with my amazing wife.
When I’m not chasing them around the house – which let’s face it, is always – you can find me in the kitchen, on the golf course, or behind an HMD.
