HEY, I’M IAN!
I’m from Tsawwassen, BC and I specialize in 3D spatial data capture and 3D geographic visualization.
I have been researching, designing, and developing 3D spatial data capture strategies and extended reality (XR) based geographic visualizations for 7+ years. My PhD research explored the intricacies of 3D spatial data capture and visualization – asking critical questions that look beyond the hype of modern technology.
I believe that we are at the precipice of a new way of experiencing our world. XR technologies, as they mature, will become as ubiquitous as modern smartphones. Our reality, that which we experience on a day-to-day basis, will be complemented by, and seamlessly entwined with, digital realities – transforming how we experience the world, society, and ourselves.
HOW DID I GET HERE?
In 2013, I walked away from the comfort of full-time employment to finish the undergraduate degree that I put on hold nearly a decade prior. I returned to university, enrolled in my first GIS course – having no idea what GIS was – and loved it! I registered for another the next semester, and then in a course entitled 3D Geovisualization – again, not really knowing what I had signed up for. That is where my obsession with 3D geospatial data, 3D visualization, and XR technologies began; and it was in these courses that I had the pleasure to learn under an amazing and inspiring visionary professor – the director of SFU’s Spatial Interface Research Lab – who quickly became a trusted mentor, friend, and professional collaborator.
I finished my undergraduate degree in 2015 and applied to do my Master of Science under the supervision of this professor. I spent two years cultivating my abilities as a GIScientist and quickly moved into the realm of virtual and augmented reality interface development. I completed my Master of Science in 2017 and applied to do my doctorate, in continued collaboration with my supervisor.
Having completed my PhD, I am now ready to embark on the next stage of my professional life. I have found my passion – for emerging technology, 3D data, XR-based visualizations, and applying my skills to help people understand the world around them – and I am ready to not only experience but define the new realities of 3D spatial data science.

PS…
I was born and raised in beautiful British Columbia and continue to call BC home. In addition to my studies, I am raising three young children with my amazing wife.
When I’m not chasing them around the house – which let’s face it, is always – you can find me in the kitchen, on the golf course, or behind an HMD.
